REPORTS TO:  Director, Business Development and Customer Affairs

SUPERVISES:  Engineers as assigned

AUTHORITIES I RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the development of new vessel and system concept designs for ships, craft and unmanned / autonomous platforms
  • Lead identification, assessment and development of new technology efforts to include autonomy
  • Develop and manage Austal USA technology roadmap as well as supporting roadmaps (e.g., autonomy) that coordinate across engineering, production, and post-delivery support functions to support new products and processes
  • Design, develop, execute, and implement projects involving complex sub-systems often involving multiple disciplines
  • Communicate a detailed understanding of Austal ship design and manufacturing processes in support of customer inquiries
  • Coordinate with other departments to develop cost estimates
  • Support development of technical responses to solicitations
  • Work closely with engineers, model makers, and marketing personnel to produce concepts for display at trade shows and conferences
  • Present and defend designs and key milestone deliverables to peers and executive level stakeholders
  • Develop responses to requests for information (RFIs), sources sought, and similar early-stage government and commercial customer inquires
  • Lead small to mid-size proposal efforts ($3-$8 million)

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS I KNOWLEDGE I EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in naval architecture or marine engineering or related discipline
  • Five (5) years’ work experience in ship building, ship repair, or ship acquisitions
  • Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills
  • Sound understanding of ship design and production
  • Strong background and experience in developing ships designs

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of US Navy, US Coast Guard, American Bureau of Shipping, International Maritime Organization (IMO), and other regulations and requirements
  • Commercial and/or government/Department of Defense shipbuilding experience
  • Program management experience
  • Estimating experience in ship construction and/or ship repair
  • Foreign Military Sales (FMS) experience
  • Familiarity with monitoring and control systems for vessel machinery and systems
  • Experience in design of oceangoing aluminum vessels (including multi-hull, high-speed)
  • Proficiency with naval architecture software required
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite a plus
