SUPERVISES: Production Control, Planning and Scheduling Personnel

AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director of Production Control is responsible for Production Control and Materials Planning/Scheduling in a highly complex manufacturing organization consisting of maching centers, production lines, final assembly cells and follow up service to production made ships.

The successful candidate will have the ability to improve the effectiveness of the current planning, scheduling and work order flow systems leading to improved delivery performance and reduced costs.

This hands-on position requires dynamic leadership, excellent interpersonal skills, problem solving, critical thinking, as well as a compelling initiative to see Austal succeed.

  • Supervise, manage and train a team of over fifty (50) production control professionals.
  • Oversee the overall design, development, and communication of planning activities by executing planning.
  • Oversee capacity planning activities associated with the site production and financial forecasts.
  • Establish a valid Master Schedule that is connected with Manufacturing capacity constraints.
  • Develop, direct the execution of, and oversee the overall production planning activities for Austal maximizing on-time delivery, production utilization, material control, and inventory control
  • Develop long-range planning initiatives for the production control group, which includes continuously evaluating the manufacturing needs, capacities, capital, expenses, etc. to meet growth goals
  • Develop models to prepare production forecast, to measure actual performance against goals and to perform trend analysis for senior management reporting and proactive strategic planning
  • Plan, prepare, issue and control production schedules and coordinates with material requirements to ensure a controlled flow of approved materials timed to meet production requirements.
  • Advise management of the status of work in progress, material availability, and potential production problems to ensure that personnel, equipment, materials and services are provided as needed.
  • Schedule equipment and personnel, confirm material supply and demands, prepare work orders or purchase requests for the production or purchase of components or parts based on a master production schedule, shop load and inventory requirements.
  • Coordinates interdepartmental activity with quality assurance, manufacturing, purchasing, engineering, inventory control, traffic, etc.
  • Schedule and expedite the movement of parts by means of move orders, stock transfers and requests for shipping orders.
  • Responsible for the development of detailed build strategies in accordance with contract specifications and drawings.
  • Responsible for determining interim product definition and manufacturing flow to determine turn time and construction pace.
  • Responsible for the identification, sequencing, and budget distribution to construction activities in accordance with the build strategy.
  • Responsible for determining scheduling logic and duration of activities.
  • Responsible for the development and ongoing maintenance of all Project Schedules (IMS).
  • Responsible for the IMS compliance with the company EVMS system description.
  • Responsible for the creation and issue of production work packages at least 2 weeks ahead of baseline start that includes budget and material allocation.
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of an integrated facility utilization plan.
  • Responsible for the development and continued updating of in-house Training Programs for Planners and Schedulers.
  • Responsible for determining installation dates for long lead time material to assist procurement of material.
  • Works with Austal Build Strategy Teams in reviewing the design for producibility improvements and cost savings.
  • Responsible for providing guidance for types of material used by construction phase.
  • Responsible for incorporating internal and external change (Drawing Mods and PCWs) into work packages and schedule.
  • Responsible for determining and managing departmental resources in support of all Programs.
  • Responsible to assist the program team by providing input into required reporting to the customer.
  • Overall responsibility for analyzing project critical path and working with Project Managers in determining methods of schedule recovery and cost reduction.
  • Will be dealing with confidential cost data and will be responsible to maintain confidentiality of information.

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:

  • Thorough knowledge of large asset manufacturing with a minimum of 12 years’ experience in Planning/Scheduling.  Shipbuilding construction experience is highly preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years management experience of leading a Production Planning or Materials Management team.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience with the planning/scheduling of Government contracts
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred
  • Fluency and proficiency in the practical application of MRP logic, scheduling logic, order policies, capacity planning, input/output control, product structures, BOM’s and routings, and standards maintenance. Strong understanding of Project Management systems, specifically Primavera.
  • Experience in the development and implementation of build strategies.
  • Thorough background in Earned Value Management (EVMS).
  • Candidate must possess a thorough understanding of planning/scheduling principles, practices, and techniques to ensure the effective use of Project Management tools.
  • Must be a self-starter capable of working without frequent direction and supervision.
  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills.
  • Detail oriented and able to resolve most daily issues without specific supervisory direction.

LIASES WITH: Engineering department, Operations department, Production and Project departments, major sub-contractors, Supply Chain and the client as requested by the company.
