SUMMARY:  

The Reliability, Availability, & Maintainability (RAM) Engineer is responsible for developing, managing and communicating the reliability & maintainability methodology to internal and external customers. The RAM Engineer will provide technical leadership to champion RAM initiatives throughout the organization and meet program requirements. The RAM Engineer will provide technical support in multiple areas of RAM to include fault tree analysis, prediction modeling in accordance with standards, and service life analysis/assessment (including aging surveillance). Support counterfeit parts and DMSMS initiatives. Support/perform FMECA on electrical, mechanical, and electronic systems and components as required. Responsible for defining and resolving customer critical product reliability and maintainability issues through analysis and cross functional teams. Employ statistical analysis, root cause corrective action, facilitation, leadership, and change management skills to achieve project goals. Provides subject matter expertise in performing Reliability Centered Maintenance through the use of reliability analysis tools in determining the appropriate level of predictive & preventative maintenance.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform RAM assessments of designs through all life cycle phases from concept design to disposal.
  • Formulate reliability analyses and predictions (including development of failure rate estimates based on handbook techniques and historical data) using advanced RAM tools and software.
  • Assess maintenance removal times.
  • Participate and/or present reliability analyses and failure info to internal and external customers, including at design reviews.
  • Provide work direction to RAM Engineer I, II, III or less senior Team personnel as required
  • Provide RAM estimates and technical plans for program planning and proposals.
  • Perform system design trade studies on simple to complex systems / equipment using RAM and life cycle cost modeling to determine design requirements and design of the product support system.
  • Reliability predictions, Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), maintenance task analyses, system/subsystem reliability /maintainability models, Failure Reporting, Analysis, and Corrective Action System (FRACAS), fault detection and isolation.
  • Derive, validate and document maintainability/Life Cycle Cost (LCC) data for products.
  • Provide detailed failure rate analysis on systems, subsystems and components or equipment level - reliability prediction based on standard model, test data and field data.
  • Perform qualitative & quantitative analysis with focus on failure rate allocations.
  • Responsible for RAM/LCC system/product demonstration and validation documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams on RAM activities and communicate with internal and external program leads, including chief engineers, system architects, program management and customer technical representatives.
  • Collaborating in a team environment performs routine analytical evaluation of assigned products (e.g. new mechanical or electromechanical components, subsystems, and systems) by applying as directed basic engineering principles.
  • Conducts routine analysis to evaluate product designs, methods, materials or processes and completes required technical documentation by applying engineering principles and company standards, and generating reports, procedures, or change proposals as required.
  • Provides technical information for review with product engineering and design review teams. Consistently applies established engineering defined practices, standards, and documentation methods.
  • Contributes to supporting documentation for procedures and technical reports.
  • Work assignments may include cross-functional or project team responsibilities. Contributes and supports other teams or individuals as needed.
  • Responsible for RAM efforts and activities on moderate to complex systems and equipment
  • Perform reliability performance analyses including warranty guarantees; Mean Time Before Unscheduled Removal (MTBUR); Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF); Failure Modes, Effects and Critical Analysis (FMECA); and overall performance trends.
  • Perform Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) analysis
  • Evaluate and summarize large quantities of data to support technical discussions.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Program Management and Business Development to support Product Improvement and Retrofit (PI&R) initiatives with technically sounded Reliability analyses.
  • Assist in organizing and coordinating RAM activities for technical compliance.
  • Apply RAM tools, standards, and analysis techniques and Logistics Product Data per GEIA-STD-0007, and Life Cycle Cost Analysis (RAM-C)
  • Support design trade studies using life cycle cost modeling to determine design requirements and design of the product support system.

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:

  • General
    • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Engineering, or a related specialized field is required (or equivalent experience); Previous Work Experience with ships is preferred. Master’s Degree in a related specialized area or field is preferred.
    • Work Experience:
      • Typically 10+ years of RAM experience in a defense related industry or 8+ years in RAM and 12 plus years in a related specialized area or field is required. Experience in Shipboard equipment and Systems is preferred.
      • Experience with analyzing large datasets (including databases) and drawing conclusions.
      • Demonstrated experience of RAM tools, standards, and analysis techniques and reliability evaluation tools like MTBF, Weibull, etc. is required
      • Demonstrate Engineering design skills with RAM/LCC focus required
      • Experience formulating reliability analyses and predictions (including development of failure rate estimates based on handbook techniques and historical data) preferably using advanced reliability tools such Weibull Analysis, RCM, RCA, FMEA, apportionment methods, etc.
      • Knowledge of procedures involved with collecting, analyzing, and scoring of Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action System (FRACAS) data.
      • Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) experience
      • Ability to work cooperatively with Design, Parts and Test Engineering functions

  • Computer and Software Skills:
    • Fluent with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.)
    • Demonstrated success in the application of advanced reliability tools such Weibull Analysis, RCM, RCA, FMEA, apportionment methods, etc.

  • Language / Communications Skills: The following skills are required:
    • The ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
    • The ability to write reports, business correspondence & procedural manuals.
    • The ability to listen to, understand, and clearly respond to complex technical questions raised by technology savvy personnel.
    • The ability to persuasively and effectively communicate to decision makers and others within the organization.

  • Mathematical Skills: The following mathematical skills are required:
    • The ability to apply mathematical logic to decision making situations.
    • Must be well versed in statistical analysis and tools implementing statistical methods.
  • Reasoning Ability: The following reasoning skills are required:
    • The ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
    • The ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
    • The ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Core Qualifications

  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • SMRP Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP)
    • Recognized Subject Matter Expert (SME) in one or more Reliability, Availability, Maintainability disciplines
    • Existing Secret clearance is preferred.
    • Prior experience maintaining Naval Ships is preferred.
    • Knowledge of Ship Systems/sub-systems to include troubleshooting techniques, reliability/maintainability issues and assessment of maintenance removal times.
    • Experience in conducting engineering investigations with suppliers and customers and participation in Reliability Review scoring boards
    • Familiarity and/or experience with RAM program plans, Statements of Work (SOW) and specification preparation.
    • Applicable experience performing maintainability analyses and predictions, to include development of maintenance times from Maintainability Task Analysis (MTA) using elemental time data, familiarity with maintainability predictions standards, maintainability techniques and maintainability design best practices.
    • Applicable experience providing analytical support to Condition Based Maintenance+ (CBM+)
    • Familiarity and/or experience with determining optimal maintenance tasking based on Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM)
    • Experience in performing Business Case Analysis (BCA) in support of Corrective Action Plan development and recommendations.
    • Familiarity and/or experience with performing or assisting in performance of Direct Operating Cost and O&S Cost Analyses including determining RAM parameters necessary for accurate algorithm creation.
