REPORTS TO:   Director, Business Development & Customer Affairs

  • Identify and develop new business opportunities in commercial and government sectors
    • New build commercial opportunities
    • Unmanned surface vessels
    • Continuation of EPF production line through variants and modifications
    • Future Surface Combatant / frigate follow on
    • New ship building opportunities
  • Develop relationships and promote opportunities in key commercial markets to include oil & gas and commercial ferries 
  • Lead customer relations and business development efforts for Government programs to include Navy LCS, Frigate, and EPF programs
  • Develop and maintain relationships with current and potential customers.
    • MARAD
    • Commercial operators (ferries, oil & gas crew boats, supply vessels)
    • Key commercial suppliers
    • Key PEOs (Ships, LCS, IWS) and Program Offices (LCS, Frigate, JHSV).
    • Cognizant OPNAV branches (to include N95, N96, N8, N42, OLA).
    • NAVSEA sections and labs.   
    • ONR and other potential R&D customers.
    • Key Offices on OSD and Navy Staff to include DASN Ships and OSD AT&L.
  • Identify and develop new Government business opportunities, including Navy, Marine Corps, Military Sealift Command, Coast Guard, NOAA and other organizations 
    • Develop capture plans for emerging opportunities; assess potential for success.
    • Develop plans to capture new business; leads capture efforts for assigned opportunities. 
    • Support development of opportunities with other Government agencies and commercial firms. 
  • Support strategic business development planning efforts.
    • Assist in the development of long-range strategy and strategic path to develop commercial revenue and maintain existing programs for Austal USA.
    • Develop business forecasts and marketing plans to address potential market areas. 
  • Support Business Development processes, including funnel management, capture management, and proposal development. 
    • Prepare gate reviews.
    • Support proposal development efforts.
  • Track the President’s Budget submission process for government programs with emphasis on National Defense Sealift fund and other non-DoD shipbuilding programs
    • Emphasis on POM development for Austal USA Programs


  • Bachelor of Science/Arts
  • Familiarity with commercial shipbuilding market, especially oil & gas and commercial passenger ferry markets
  • Familiarity with commercial shipbuilding supplier base and operators
  • Familiarity with Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) / Frigate and Expeditionary Fast (EPF) programs 
  • Possess an understanding of DoD acquisition process as related to DoN ship procurement
  • Desired Qualifications
    • Experience in maritime industry
    • Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard officer with operational experience; or, experience in commercial shipbuilding business development
    • Experience preparing winning proposals and leading capture efforts for shipbuilding programs; formal proposal training desired.
    • Experience leading / supporting major captures for commercial or DoD programs

    • Excellent communication skills
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret contracts, contract specifications, and major equipment specifications.

DIRECTION EXERCISED: Full discretionary authority to assign work

DISCRETION EXERCISED: Full discretionary authority to correct and discipline, recommend pay increase, transfers, promotions, discharges, and process grievances.

  • Position will necessitate travel on a regular basis, primarily to Austal USA facility in Mobile, AL and sub-contractor locations.
  • Overtime and weekends will be required on occasion to meet deadlines and while supporting / leading proposal efforts.  
  • Position requires a confident self-starter. Ability to work in a fast-paced dynamic environment; and be adaptive to change.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
  • Candidates must be able to provide proof of US Person status.
