REPORTS TO:  Vice President of Engineering

SUPERVISES: Department Engineers, Designers, Draftspersons, Logisticians and support staff.


  • Responsible for the management of Sustainment Support Engineering department to support Integrated Post Delivery Availably (IPDA);Post Delivery Availability (PDA); Post Shakedown Availability (PSA) and Planning Yard (PY) activities for the LCS 2 and JHSV classes
  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Support the development Sustainment Support Availability Planning   
    • Support the development of Sustainment Support Availability ROMs and other budgetary documents
    • Development of Navsea 4E Work Specification
    • Develop Ship Installation Drawings and other Engineering Products
    • Development of material requisition, identification of long lead material, procurement specification and material kitting requirements
    • Support the development of Availability Analysis Documents
    • Provide  Availability Execution Support for ships in Sustainment Availabilities
    • Managing Sustainment Integrated Logistical Support activities
    • Maintain Ship’s Selective Record Drawings
    • Develop and maintain a Lesson Learned database for condition reports and other Sustainment issues
    • Develop and manage department budgets
    • Responsible for Sustainment Support Engineering Department personnel, work assignments, personnel reviews department hiring/firing and resource needs and other management activities
    • Management of all Sustainment Support Engineering Tasks
    • Meeting project schedule, work quality and budget
    • Develop department metrics  and progress reports
  • Responsible for strategic and tactical planning for the department and provides input to the same planning for the Post Delivery Service and Support program.


  • Successful completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Naval Architecture.
  • Minimum 5 years of supervision of Engineers, Designers and Draftspersons.
  • Minimum 10 years of Post Delivery Support and Fleet Modernization experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of shipyard design and construction experience or equivalent work experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of CPM scheduling
  • Demonstrated ability to meet cost and schedule goals
  • Experienced in interacting with Production, multiple design teams from several companies, customer representatives and equipment manufacturers.
  • Computer literate and familiar with AutoCAD, Ship Constructor and Microsoft Office products.
  • Thorough knowledge of ship hull, mechanical and electrical systems design.
  • A working knowledge of Combat System, Control System and Communication System.
  • Strong working knowledge of NAVSEA Mil-Standards, Naval and the General Overhaul of Surface requirements.
  • Must have understanding of the Navy’s Integrated Logistic Support system
  • Experienced in the construction of high speed aluminum vessels is advantageous but not a requirement
  • Working knowledge of modular construction methods and material kitting activities is advantageous but not a requirement.
  • Experienced in design, construction, modernization and maintenance  of US Navy vessels
  • Understanding of shock design
  • Working knowledge of FEA methods is advantageous but not a requirement.
  • Understanding of interfaces and coordination between disciplines and auxiliary support.


  • Computer – MS Office, MS Project, AutoCAD, Ship Constructor and Navis Works


  • Will lead and direct the work of Engineers, Designers, Draftspersons, Logisticians and support personnel.
  • Will determine technical adequacy of drawings and calculations


  • Will evaluate Engineers, Designers, Draftspersons, Logisticians and support personnel.
  • Has authority to direct, evaluate and correct the work of Engineers, Designers, Draftspersons and support personnel.

LIAISES WITH:  Austal Engineering, Production Personnel, Procurement, Program Management and other internal Austal customers; Customer; Regulatory Bodies, Equipment Suppliers, Support Vendors and other external customers.


  • Must be willing to travel and maintain a current passport.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain required Security Clearance.
