REPORTS TO: Crane/Rigging Manager
SUPERVISES: Crane/Rigging Supervisors
AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implement and utilize the Ten Fundamentals of Supervision (SUP214).
- Responsible for ensuring that all subordinate supervisors also implement and utilize the Ten Fundamentals of Supervision.
- Responsible for the implementation of all production schedules, monitoring and maintenance of schedules in conjunction with Supervisors.
- Responsible for ensuring that all Austal USA and/or departmental procedures are adhered to in all facets of Crane/Rigging Dept. operations particularly as it pertains to the procedures concerning heavy lifts, transporting of modules, and placement, installation, and/or lifting and turning of modules or units.
- Responsible for sourcing and distributing information and direction to Supervisors.
- Promote (thru avid participation thereby leading by example) the continuous development of a work environment that is compliant with all applicable regulations, policies, and/or standards concerning hazard/loss control, environmental responsibilities, and security and health concerns.
- Provide motivation, maintain morale and minimize confrontation.
- Ensure that all timesheets are processed and allocated daily.
- Maintain succession plan within department, identify key personnel and implement training programs.
- Responsible for review and recommendations on pay rates, promotions, possible disciplinary action, and other issues concerning management of personnel.
- Ensuring that comprehensive inventories, inspections, and testing of all rigging equipment are maintained and kept up to date.
- Oversee all activities conducted by the Crane/Rigging Dept. while instilling in all subordinates a commitment to the concept of continuous improvement through a safely efficient approach to the day-to-day tasks performed.
QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 10 years experience in the Crane and Rigging trade, preferably with an extensive supervisory background particularly as it pertains to the shipyard environment.
- Must be familiar with the operation and safe uses of transporters.
- Knowledge and understanding of all applicable OSHA, ANSI, and ASME regulations and standards concerning crane operating and rigging.
- Must have excellent people management skills.
- Must be able to remain calm, thoughtful, and insightful when faced with pressure situations.
- Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with members of other departments, regulatory representatives, and customer reps.
- Must have workable computer skills (Word and Excel in particular).
- Must be available to work any and all scheduled work shifts as required.
TOOLS:
- No tools required but must have thorough familiarity with all tools and equipment used in the rigging trade.
DIRECTION EXERCISED:
- Authority to direct supervisors as it pertains to tasking crews with the day-to-day requirements of the project specifications.
DISCRETION EXERCISED:
- Authority to correct unacceptable behavior or work practices (preferably through counseling), take disciplinary action when warranted, recommend pay increases and/or promotions, and recommend recruitment requirements.
LIAISES WITH:
- Trade managers, foremen, and supervisors; members of project teams; regulatory representatives and customer reps.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit.
Specific physical requirements include the following:
Must have the ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel. Perform prolonged standing. Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis. Ability to turn body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis. Lift/push/pull 50lbs to 75lbs on an occasional basis. Lift/push/pull up to 20lbs on a frequent basis. Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps). Ability to work at heights above 12’ while working from ladders, scaffolding and/or man lifts. Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, overhead). Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment. Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles. Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment. Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards. Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures. Ability to enter 18” x 36” openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time. Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands. Able to utilize adequate visual skills. Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side and reaching down. Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat.
