REPORTS TO: Advance Shipbuilding Manager

SUPERVISES: N/A

AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES: The Welding Engineer I shall be capable of directing those operations associated with weldments and other types of

applied joints that are completed in accordance with the appropriate contract documents, codes, and other standards to produce a satisfactory product. The welding engineer’s activities begin before production welding, continue through the production process and end with the review of a satisfactory weld. Other responsibilities are as follows:

  • Selection of welding processes, development of welding parameters and procedure qualification records
  • Preparation and review of written welding procedures in accordance with contract specifications and welding procedure qualifications
  • Preparation of customer submittals to transmit information and plans, gain approvals, and authorize repairs when required
  • Support for shop floor fabrication operations, including preparations for upcoming work, troubleshooting of welding issues and resolution, and generation of process improvement ideas
  • Process efficiency studies to reduce schedule and cost
  • Assist in preparing, qualification, documentation, and maintenance of welding procedures
  • Assist with identification, design/procurement, and implementation of welding equipment and/or tool needs
  • Review of quote packages in support of estimates for qualification manufacturing feasibility, and technical input as needed
  • Support evaluation(s) and make recommendations regarding current and new weld assembly processing, tooling, and equipment for possible application to Austal USA processes
  • Assist in developing and implementing work instructions for part fit-up, tack welding, welding, and repair requirements
  • Recommend design changes to improve quality, reliability, and productivity of welding processes
  • Develop and implement documents and procedures for validation of welding equipment and processes to meet or exceed customer specifications
  • Assist in evaluating new equipment, techniques and materials in the welding field, for possible future applications
  • Responsible for weld sequencing to control distortion
  • Work with Accuracy Control to collect data to predict shrinkage in both ferrous and nonferrous metals

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering Technology or Welding Engineering is required. ABET Accredited Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering or Welding Engineering Technology
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Products and AutoCAD)
  • Ability to work well and communicate with various layers of management
  • Ability to read key plans and specifications
  • Strong analysis and problem solving capabilities
  • Enjoys a “hands on” management environment
  • Theoretical understanding of the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Submerged Arc Welding (SAW), Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) and stud welding processes. Additional knowledge of other processes is beneficial but not necessarily required
  • Theoretical understanding of the welding of ferrous and non-ferrous base metals
    • This understanding includes but is not limited to what can occur during welding. As well as knowing the proper selection of filler metals, shielding gases and potentially recommending different welding processes as needed
  • Theoretical understanding of nondestructive testing methods for welds
    • Understanding includes the ability to interpret Ultrasound results, Radiographic results, Penetrant testing results, Magnetic Particle results, etc.

TOOLS: Personal computing and other electronic communication devices, weld equipment, hand tools, industrial equipment and software programs.

DIRECTION EXERCISED:

  • Full discretionary authority in auditing/correcting welding in the field
