Austal USA Advanced Technologies (AT) is a division of Austal USA, a global defense prime contractor and a designer and manufacturer of defense and commercial ships.

Austal USA AT works at the forefront to invent, mature, and implement advanced maritime technologies which enhance operational capacities and improve readiness of our defense systems. Austal USA AT operates a technology hub in Charlottesville VA which works to bring cutting-edge manufacturing technologies to scale and also oversees operation of the U.S. Navy’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM COE) located in Danville, VA. The mission of the AM COE is to operationalize additive manufacturing in the submarine industrial base and provide emergent request support to sustain our Nation’s fleet.

AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

The DFAM Engineer IV will have extensive experience in Design for Additive Manufacturing and a passion for technology and innovation.  Working with the Director of Advanced Technology and other members of Austal USA Advanced Technologies, this role will play a critical part in the design process for additive projects, while also solving customer application issues, conducting training, and more. Additional responsibilities include:                                                                                                                                                                                                   

  • Provide expertise in DfAM (Design for Additive Manufacturing).
  • Provide in-depth engineering support for the additive manufacturing process.
  • Design products for additive manufacturing with a focus on performance, quality, reliability, cost, and ease of manufacturing.
  • Partnering with manufacturing teams to identify Additive Manufacturing opportunities.
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Highly adaptable and able to offer creative solutions for difficult, often ambiguous problems.
  • Support proposal development for both production and R&D programs.

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in an Engineering field.
  • 8+ years of engineering and design experience in DfAM.
  • Mastery with 3D CAD software; experience in simulation and optimization tools strongly preferred.
  • Possesses strong leadership skills with the ability to help grow company culture.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scheduling, possess an ability to monitor progress to schedule and adhere to strict deadlines required.
  • DfAM expertise in both polymer and metal applications.
  • Experience with reverse engineering technologies and transitioning capture data into models.
  • Demonstrated product development experience and acumen from pre-concept to completion.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of Leadership.

TOOLS:   Computer – MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook), 3D CAD Software (Solidworks, Inventor, Fusion 360, Onshape, SpaceClaim, SolidEdge, and/or Siemens NX), DfAM Software (nTop, Netfabb, Ansys Additive Suite, and/or Altair Sulis)

LIAISES WITH:  Engineers, Production Personnel, Logistics, Regulatory Bodies, Program Management and Equipment Suppliers.

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:
