REPORTS TO:  Sr Dept Manager Engineering

SUPERVISES:  Design Leads, Designers, and Draftspersons

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead, mentor, and manage the design team to achieve design objectives for various department programs

  • Provide clear direction, set priorities, and allocate resources to ensure timely and high-quality design deliverables

  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance team performance and ensure alignment with project goals

  • Facilitate communication between designers, design leads, and other departments to ensure smooth workflows and timely completion of products

  • Offer strategic consultation to the Engineering Leadership team on the development of Functional Design Drawings, 3D Modeling, and Construction Drawings, ensuring alignment with overall project objectives and technical requirements

  • Establish standardized design practices across projects within the department.

  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Design Leads

  • Establish work flows, procedures, and processes for functional drawings, 3D modeling, construction drawings, and design change products

  • Responsible for ensuring design processes and procedures are being properly used throughout the design team 

  • Responsible for overall drawing and modeling quality of the design team

  • Responsible for establishing design team budgets, tracking estimates at completion for the project design efforts, and ensuring design team is operating efficiently

  • Works with Production Management, cross-functional design teams, and customer representatives, to understand how design products can be improved for Production efficiency             

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate’s degree or technical diploma in Drafting, Design Technology, Engineering or similar field or a combination of education and related experience and

  • Ten (10) years of 3D modeling experience or equivalent experience in the maritime industry

  • Five (5) years of experience leading multiple design projects and teams

  • Advanced proficiency in CAD software (ex: AutoCAD) and design principles, Ship Constructor preferred

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Strong understanding of work scheduling processes and ability to adhere to strict deadlines

  • Ability to interact positively with Production managers, multiple design teams from several companies, customer representatives and equipment manufacturers

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:

The ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance may be required if deemed necessary in the scope of your position responsibilities.

  • Will manage and direct the work of Designers and Draftspersons

  • Ensures that project and department milestones and goals are met while adhering to approved budgets and design standards

  • Will determine technical adequacy of drawings

DISCRETION EXERCISED:

  • Has authority to assign tasks, set priorities, and oversee project workflows

  • Provides input on performance evaluations, hiring decisions, and staff development initiatives of Designers and Draftspersons

  • Has authority to direct, evaluate and correct the work of Designers and Draftspersons

  • Approves final design outputs for accuracy, quality, and compliance

LIAISES WITH:  Engineers, Designers, Drafters, Production Personnel, Customer, Program Management and Equipment Suppliers
